Erin Sinnott Mid-Season Player Journal

m14-erin-sinnott

My name is Erin Sinnott. I’m a 6’0 Senior small forward at Oswego High School. I have committed to play basketball at the University of Evansville. I primarily spent my summer working on the skills I knew I lacked and would keep me from being a collegiate level player. I spent a lot of time lifting weights and making sure my body was prepared to compete with top level players. Also, I spent a lot of time increasing my athleticism by doing a lot of footwork drills. I got up early to go shoot in the gym. On top of all of that, I was doing M14 summer sessions to make sure my handles were tight and my shot was on point.During the Fall Academy, Matt had me write down my season goals during our preseason M14 sessions. Individually, I wrote that I wanted to have a double-double almost every game, average close to 20 ppg, and make the All-Area team. As a team our goals were to win our Christmas tournament, have more wins than last season (24-8), and make it to Redbird Arena for the state tournament. My summer prepared me to accomplish these goals just like studying helps you pass a test. I am constantly working on my craft, endless shooting, and working hard at M14 so everything is just second nature. M14 has prepared me for my season because I spent countless hours in a gym being yelled at and pushed by Matt Miller. That man does not stop and never will. I put in the work; I put in the time and effort to be successful. When I was ready to coast he challenged me, whether it was coming at my life, or just reminding me why I am doing all this. Him and the M14 staff holding me at such a high standard and never quitting on me is what prepared me for season, and what will continue to prepare me for many seasons to come.

Reality has definitely met expectation so far. No one said earning a scholarship would be easy. The reality of that would be if it was easy everyone would do it. I think the fact that lot of people told me I couldn’t was what pushed me so hard throughout the years. When I started M14 in junior high I would cry after almost every session because it was so challenging and pushed me so far out of my comfort zone, but I kept going back. After a while I was expected to perform at the level that I had pushed myself to be at. Now I am proud to say I earned a division I scholarship and I am so glad that’s my reality now!Personally, I did not start the season how I wanted to. I was struggling with things that I had never had to deal with before being the senior on the team, but I have worked really hard to get back to where I needed to be. As a team we are doing well with a record of 13-7. Each of our losses have been close games. We just need to work on staying positive, being great teammates, and keeping good team chemistry. I don’t really keep track of my personal stats during the season because the most important thing is whether we are winning or losing.

Practices during the season are very evenly paced, some parts are fast, some are slower. We are getting up and down the floor at least once during every practice. Our emphasis for each practice usually comes from how we are performing in games. We do lots box out/close out drills, shooting, ball denial, passing, and playing defense up and down the floor. We watch film and go over scouting reports before every game as well. My favorite drills are basic skill drills like dribbling and shooting because those are the ones people get lazy with. Just dribbling and shooting for 30 minutes can go a very long way, and it shows in my game. I also enjoy box out drills very much because I enjoy lots of contact. My least favorite drill would probably just be playing 1 on 1. I have now grown to like it more because it is just so important. It pushes me to handle pressure, be creative, and rely on just myself.
